Inexplicable Fashion Trend

I admit I don’t do quirky when it comes to dressing but although I’m no Carrie Bradshaw I certainly do read my Vogue and know what’s “in” and what’s “out.” However, a recent trend in Tokyo fashion has me completely baffled: the skinny half pants that awkwardly fall right at knee level. I’ve seen this look all over town ever since the temperature crept up to double digits, and honestly, not one person looked good in them. I mean, unless you are a supermodel with super long limbs, chances are you are going to look like an amputee.

Another thing I’d never been able to understand is the skirt over jeans look. It’s as if the person couldn’t decide when she got up in the morning whether to go with skirt or jeans, so she threw on both, without looking herself over in the mirror before stepping out the door. Having said that, I do admit that certain people, namely those who resemble supermodels in their proportions, can pull this look off if the skirt is flowy and the jeans skinny.

What I saw today on the train, on the other hand, is so … (hmmm, how should I put it, hideous comes to mind, but I am not going to be too harsh) God awful, that I am at a loss for words. And I'm not even going to comment on those black sockies that peak out from the shoes.

Girl, go get yourself a full-length mirror for crying out loud!

eek! I agree that looks bad...but I like the skirt over pants idea. It all depends on the style of skirts/pants combo. A nice pair of jeans with a thigh-high pleated skirt or black denim skirt looks nice. It also helps out those people with fat thigh problems. ^-^ Love your blog by the way...and I think I've seen some of your posts on allrecipes.com too? =)

Thanks, Tea, am glad you like this blog. Hmmm, never thought about the fat thigh problem.

Yup, that's probably me on Allrecipes. I document what I eat everyday with photos, some of which ends up there if I made something on their site.

Yep, I agree with you Lynn. To me, a lot of the fashion you see on the "runway", should stay on the "runway" and not make it out to the street. But, I guess, to each their own individualism. -lance

I like the new look with the shorts, to be honest (but not paired with leggings the way the girl in your photo did it; and her shorts weren't very nice or flattering). It's kind of cute in a boyish way, but I admit you gotta have the legs for it.

Great photojournalism, by the way! I have to admit, I'm still kind of chicken about photographing strangers in public. I saw this girl wearing an unusual outfit the other day and really wanted to take her picture. But I always fear someone will catch me and give me this "Pervert!" look.

By the way, I just tried your rosemary sourdough roll and it *was* sour!

Lance, so true, but everyone's free to put on whatever they want.

Rachel, oh good! The starter has yo-yoed so many times between sour and not-sour that I can't even tell any more. Plus, I had the rolls with tomato based ox-tail soup, so I wasn't sure whether it was the soup or the roll that was sour.

Hehe, I was pretending to show Jason pix on my camera when I took that shot (she was 2 ft from where I sat) but I suspect the shutter sound might have given me away ;oP

i don't like it either, and old navy and GAP are marketing this trend as the new "bermuda short".

ick.

i used to wear them as "pedal pushers" when i was 8 and i didn't like it then, either--especially since mine were corduroy. i HATE corduroy.

Tomato based oxtail soup!!!!! That sounds so good!!!! How was it???? Next time you make it, could you share your recipe? I'm into this soup mood....... Thanks, lance

Hmmm, they do have an Old Navy look, or maybe Uniqlo. But awful, regardless where they came from.

Lance - the soup was great. It's one of those things that comes out consistently good without a recipe. I use a slow cooker on low but you can do it over stove top. Boil the tails in water (amount not important as you can adjust later). After about 5 hours, add cabbage, carrots (and potato if you want it to be a one dish meal). Continue for another 2 hours. Add more water if you like. Dump in a can of stewed tomato, a copious amount of sugar (sometimes I use light brown sugar), ketchup, and S&P. Taste as you go until you are satisfied with the result. Let it cook on low for another hour. Finally, fry up some flour in butter until it becomes a paste, stir into the soup to make it thick. If you have potato in the soup, you may not need to do this. Enjoy!

Thanks for the report (and the photo!), Lynn - that was very funny and I think I have to agree with you... I'd be overwhelmed next time I go back to Japan, I'm sure.

Thanks Lynn!!! I will try making your oxtail tomato soup. Now, to get to the market and pick up some oxtail. Mahalos, lance

Keiko, sometimes I couldn't help but admire the courage of those girls. Youth...

Lance, let me know how the soup turns out.
